Tottenham vs. Liverpool premier league 2022: Who won the game? USA TODAY

Before Harry Kane scored a relief goal, the Egyptian star scored twice.

Liverpool ultimately defeated Tottenham Hotspur by 2-1 on Sunday, ending their season-long Premier League winless away streak. Mo Salah’s brace gave Jurgen Klopp’s team the three points they needed to leave Anfield within the league, despite away victories at Rangers and Ajax in the UEFA Champions League.

With a sporadic first half of the season, which could have just turned around after a victory against Napoli in Europe, the Egyptian scored twice in the first half at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to help Liverpool rekindle their hopes of challenging for a spot in the top four.

This triumph also stopped a string of two consecutive Premier League losses after setbacks to Nottingham Forest, and Leeds United erased a convincing victory over Manchester City.

After only 11 minutes, Salah scored off an assist from Darwin Nunez before receiving a second goal off Eric Dier’s errant header backward five minutes before halftime. Ivan Perisic did strike the post once in each half, but Spurs didn’t score until the 70th minute when the active Dejan Kulusevski set up Harry Kane.

However, Son Heung Min’s midweek face injury in the thrilling late win away at Olympique de Marseille in the Champions League prevented Antonio Conte’s team from completing their comeback. With one game more played than Manchester United, Spurs are now in the top four, one point behind Newcastle United and three points ahead of them.

After United lost 3-1 to Aston Villa on Unai Emery’s debut at Villa Park, Liverpool is currently up to ninth and just four points off the European playoff spots. However, they still have a ways to go before they can be considered among the top four teams again.

Tottenham has had a difficult time since their loss to United, what with the Newcastle defeat, a tie with Sporting CP that forced them to qualify from a simple Champions League group diligently, and now this. The fourth place seems okay on the surface, especially after United’s defeat to Villa, but Erik ten Hag’s team does have a game left, and a victory there might tighten the race.

The top two teams, Arsenal and City, are moving away, and Newcastle has now gone into the top three. On the plus side, others are in a worse situation. Chelsea and Liverpool are still behind. Conte received a booking, which is consistent with his recent unhappiness with his team’s incapacity to compete as he wants them to. If they can avoid slipups in the EFL Cup away at Forest or against Leeds in the league, the World Cup break might be a blessing in disguise.

Liverpool lift-off??

The first league away victory of the season for Klopp’s team would do wonders for their confidence since they have been inconsistent all season, especially in the Premier League. There will also be a feeling that the most challenging part of this final drive before the World Cup break has been over and that Southampton’s league struggles and Derby County’s EFL Cup issues should be over.

This season, the Reds have occasionally been their own worst enemies. Most recently, they wasted the hard work that went into their excellent victory against City by losing to Forest and Leeds. After the most recent 2-0 win against Napoli and this, there is some real momentum developing that should encourage a positive pause rather than one where Klopp axes his team or the club mulls the German tactician’s position.

Spurs missed Son in this match, but they may be thankful that Kulusevski made his first appearance since late September and had an immediate effect. The Swedish player immediately assisted Kane in scoring, which could lead to further action before the World Cup break. Getting the 22-year-old back to playing regularly will help make performances under Conte more creative, albeit it will only fix some of Tottenham’s problems.

On Monday, both teams will learn whether they advance to the Champions League Round of 16. Even though they won’t draw one other until later, who the duo meets in Nyon might significantly impact how their seasons develop. Although Paris Saint-Germain slid to second place in the final minute and would not be a desirable opponent, Spurs won their group to obtain a more straightforward path on paper. Liverpool is one of the clubs the group winners would be anxious to avoid, given their propensity to show up and perform against their more challenging opponents. They are in the runners-up pot together with PSG.

When is the Champions League draw, and where and how to watch it?

Set your alarms on Monday morning because the 16 matches will be decided bright and early. On February 14, 2023, the opening leg of the round of 16 will begin.
