Clemson football hopes
CLEMSON– We learned a few things on Saturday during Clemson’s football match with South Carolina at Memorial Stadium.

South Carolina’s victory over Tennessee this week seemed more legit than it was not.
Clemson’s slim hopes of getting into an appearance in the College Football Playoff are no more a pipedream.
DJ Uiagalelei of Clemson may be more of a punter than a quarterback.
In the second half, a decision was taken to either take win or lose to Uiagalelei.
The No. 7 Tigers lost 31-30.
Uiagalelei’s efficiency was not there at the start, and they ended up finishing 9-of-29 for 98 yards with a touchdown and one interception.
We waited for a surprise appearance by sophomore Cade Klubnik, but he didn’t. He’s not likely to could have helped save the Tigers (10-2) from their fate in this particular game. However, there were plenty of fans eager for him to appear.
The end of Clemson’s CFP hopes occurred suddenly.

If Clemson linebacker Jeremiah Trotter Jr. returned an interception 35 yards for a touchdown, and the Tigers then scored a touchdown off nine yards by Uiagalelei during their next game, likely moans and groans were coming from fans of the South Carolina faithful in attendance at Memorial Stadium.
A “here-we-go-again” song was not just possible but even plausible.
In the end, Clemson had won seven straight games in the series, most of them with a dominant style, and Clemson fans could have expected similar results when their team surged to a lead of two touchdowns.
However, from there, it was The Gamecocks (8-4) who laid out the way for Clemson’s first loss of the season and the first defeat of their state rival since 2013.
South Carolina was opportunistic. QB Spencer Rattler waited until Saturday night to show his talent, was 25-of-39 in passing for 360 yards, and frequently discovered open receivers against a shaky Clemson secondary.

Clemson’s offense looked dull and was exacerbated by the ongoing and worrying trend of making mistakes. The Tigers have been unable to catch the ball with fifteen turnovers, including nine fumbles and six interceptions over the past five games, after only having five turnovers total in the initial seven games.

The most crucial turnover occurred as Antonio Williams fumbled the ball upon a returned punt and ended the Tiger’s last chance to win with 2:22 to go.

This week, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney was thrilled regarding the annual Palmetto Bowl and expected the Tigers to get the best out of South Carolina.

“They were at their very best, and they played the best we could,” Swinney said about the Gamecocks’ loss of the time–No. 5 Tennessee and the team’s defeat of Miami.
“I’ve had both sides. I’ve won some huge and a few big. Also, I’ve won some close and lost some.”
The loss on Saturday certainly qualifies as a second-round loss, but to the Tigers, it could be an upset.
