Where do Abbott and O’Rourke, and Abbott stand on important issues
Throughout the election season, the two candidates tried to rally their respective parties on issues such as public safety, the economy and the U.S./Mexico border, and education.

Abbott has abstained from discussing abortion since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. In contrast, O’Rourke and Democrats have focused on their criticisms of Texas Republicans on laws designed to restrict access to abortion to the point that abortion is almost impossible within this Lone Star state.

Abbott has praised initiatives in the policy he has branded as his own, Operation Lone Star, which he launched in March 2021 to stop illegal immigration. O’Rourke would like to offer immigrants an opportunity to be citizens and change the family reunification system.

The polls have generally favored Republicans over Democrats in the area of border safety along with immigration.
The issue of gun violence has gained momentum in the summer following the shooting of 19 students and two educators at Robb Elementary in Uvalde on the 24th of May. After the shooting, Abbott has consistently said that the solutions should be centered on reforming mental health rather than limiting it to the 2nd Amendment.

During the campaign, the governor consistently criticized O’Rourke’s previous positions on gun control. During the current campaign, the Democrats concentrated on repealing Texas permitless carry laws increasing the age necessary to buy AR-15-style guns, frequently the preferred weapon for mass shootings, and closing the background checks for private sales loopholes.
Concerns about the Texas grid power supply began to surface in the wake of the winter storm, which left thousands of Texans unable to access power for several days as the power grid was just minutes away from complete collapse. In some instances, the issue has given an energy boost to the O’Rourke campaign and blamed incumbents for the grid’s malfunction. O’Rourke has claimed that the governor did not do enough to stop grid failures and has proposed his ideas to improve the grid. Abbott has cited the laws he signed to help the grid be more efficient.

Overall, in the long run, the Abbott campaign has attempted to link O’Rourke to the presidency of Joe Biden, whose approval ratings have remained constantly low among Texans. Since becoming the candidate, O’Rourke has been forced to defend himself in attempting to make the argument to voters that Texas isn’t in better shape as it was when Abbott was first elected in 2015.
The Abbott campaign will host its election watch party in McAllen, an area in the politically contentious Rio Grande Valley- a longtime Democratic stronghold for which Republicans have heavily competed during this election cycle. O’Rourke will organize his watch party in his hometown of El Paso, a district that voted him into Congress.
