Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man (2008) started the golden age of superhero films. Now, the MSCU has officially been made part of United States History. MovieWeb.com reveals that the Library of Congress registers only 25 films each year. They can be of any kind. It says a lot about American filmmaking.

The Stateside Library of Congress archive films is considered almost perfect representations of the art of filmmaking, which have also significantly impacted American culture. These films will be archived to help future generations understand American culture.

Because only high-rated works are allowed into the Library, it might seem bizarre that a movie deemed a “popcorn flick” by critics has been incorporated into American cinematic history and other cinema classics. Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man would be great for this year’s selection.

Before Robert Downey Jr. starred in Iron Man, superhero movies were outmoded thanks to a decade of generally mediocre films (looking at 1997’s Batman & Robin). 2008’s Iron Man was not only a breakthrough in the superhero genre but also a new phenomenon that has profoundly impacted culture. Marvel’s success with the cinematic universe inspired DC, and they started a cinematic contest that has been going since almost fifteen years.

Regardless of what some film critics think of the art of the superhero genre’s artistic merits, it is certain that Robert Downey Jr. has made film history with his acceptance of the role of Tony Stark. Therefore, Iron Man should be included in this year’s Library addition of 25 films.

Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man was one of many historical films archived this past year. The classic rom-com featuring Meg Ryan’s infamous fake-sex scene, When Harry Meets Sally (1989), has been catalogued. Also included was the iconic line, “I will have what she’s having,” which was delivered in the film by Rob Reiner’s mom, Estelle Reiner. Another 1989 classic, Disney’s animated The Little Mermaid, has also been registered in this year’s collections.

The 25 films chosen each year allow you to record movies of any kind and any year. Newsreel footage from a Mardi Gras Carnival Parade of 1898 was saved with this year’s assemblage.

After this year’s additions are accounted for, 850 American films in the Library have been archived as part of US histories.
