Cardinals’ Kyler Murray was carted off. Patriots with a knee injury and is believed to have ruptured his ACL
The quarterback was thrown down in a tense scramble on the third play in the game.
The Cardinals wanted to prove themselves offensively against the Patriots with one of the league’s toughest defensive teams in the hands of Bill Belichick. In the first three minutes of the game’s prime time, however, Arizona lost its quarterback, Kyler Murray, to an injury to the knee that wasn’t sustained by contact. Murray, the former No. 1 overall draft pick, scurried during the Cardinal’s first offensive drive of the game but only to see his right knee appear swollen on the route to the field. Transferred back to his locker to be replaced by veteran backup Colt McCoy, Murray is believed to have sustained a tear to his ACL, as per Mike Jurecki.
The Cardinals initially declared Murray unfit to play. However, the quarterback appeared disoriented as he was taken off, securing the top of his head in a towel while teammates helped them. McCoy was a fumble victim in his first attempt to play in the center against New England. He previously started two games on the side of Murray in the past, going 1-1, while Murray was recovering from an injury to his hamstring. In the second quarter, shortly after the start of the second quarter, the Cardinals decided to officially rule Murray out, which left McCoy to play in his place for the rest of the game.
An MRI and further tests will determine the severity of the injury suffered by Murray. A tear to the ACL will keep the QB for the rest of 2022 and possibly for a portion of the 2023 season, as such injuries typically require 9-12 weeks of rehab. Murray has suffered injuries in all 4 NFL seasons since joining the league in 2019, missing the 2021 season three times because of ankle problems. However, a tear to the ACL could be the most serious medical blow in his career. It could force Arizona to count on McCoy or a veteran replacement for the next season.
Murray, 25 years old, Murray this offseason, signed a five-year, $230.5 million contract extension that will tie Murray to Arizona until 2028. Murray has also been the subject of controversy throughout the year, particularly arguing with Cardinals brass before signing his new contract, publicly slamming reporters for their coverage of contingencies contained within his agreement, and being criticized by the outside for his leadership in the team’s four-game losing streak.
