Brendan Fraser has received a lot of awards buzz for his role in “The Whale.” He says he does not plan to attend the next Golden Globes ceremony and cites his “history” with them in a new interview.
Brendan Fraser confirms that he won’t be attending the Golden Globes in 2022.
“I have more history and respect for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association than my relationship with them,” he said. In an interview, the actor stated that he would not be participating.
Fraser seems to be referring to 2018 allegations that the actor made against Philip Berk, former president of HFPA, who he claims groped him at a 2003 event.
Fraser shared his thoughts with GQ: “My mother wasn’t a hypocrite. You can call me multiple things, but not this.”
Fraser wrote a different profile in 2018 about his encounter with Berk during a luncheon hosted at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Fraser claimed Berk grabbed Fraser’s rear end and touched him between his genitals.
“I felt ill. Fraser stated that he felt like a small child at the time. “I felt like a ball was in my throat. “I thought I was going crazy.”
Berk denied wrongdoing and admitted that he rubbed Fraser’s buttocks at the event. However, in his interview with GQ, he said he did this in good humor.
The HFPA stated Fraser’s allegations that it was investigating further details and “stands strongly against sexual harassment.”
Fraser claimed to GQ that the organization eventually came back to Fraser and suggested issuing a joint declaration that stated.
He states, “Although it was concluded Mr. Berk inappropriately touched M. Fraser, evidence supports that it was meant to be taken as a joke and not as a sexual advance.”
Fraser claims he didn’t agree to sign the alleged joint declaration.
CNN reached out to Berk and the HFPA for comment.
Fraser told GQ, “I knew they’d close ranks.” “I knew that they would push the envelope. They would win the story. “I knew I had no future in that system.”
Fraser reflected on why his account didn’t make waves and said it was because it was too prickly, sharp-edged, or icky to get people to invest emotionally in it.

Following Fraser’s allegations, Berk remained active in the HFPA until last year, when he was fired for disseminating an article that referred to Black Lives Matter as a “racist hatred movement.”
After it was revealed that the Golden Globes were not made up of any Black voters, the Los Angeles Times also took heat for their role in preparing for the Oscars.
Although the organization attempts to address the controversy and other ethical concerns, NBC cut broadcast ties within the interim, pending efforts by the group to enact “meaningful Reform.”
The 2022 Golden Globes did not air on television. NBC announced that the show would be aired again in 2023 in September, citing the HFPA’s “commitment towards ongoing change.”
Fraser was skeptical when asked if he believed any HFPA reforms would lead to real progress.
“At the moment, not. Perhaps time will reveal if they are going to. I don’t know what they’re going to do,” said he to GQ this week. “I don’t know.”
After receiving an overwhelmingly positive response at film festivals season, Fraser is now considered a contender for the best actor Oscar nomination.
