Avatar: The Way of Water is an upcoming James Cameron epic science fiction movie produced by 20th Century Studios. Following Avatar, it is the second film in Cameron’s Avatar franchise (2009). Cameron is co-producing the film with Jon Landau, and Josh Friedman was initially announced as Cameron’s co-writer. However, it was later revealed that Cameron, Rick Jaffa, Friedman, Amanda Silver, and Shane Salerno all participated in the writing process of all sequels before being credited with separate scripts, making the eventual writing credits unclear.

However, Friedman stated in November 2015 that he had only written the third film and that Jaffa and Silver co-wrote the second film with Cameron, which was verified on October 21, 2022, in a promotional trailer for the film. Original cast members Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaa, Stephen Lang, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Giovanni Ribisi, Dileep Rao, and Matt Gerald reprise their roles, while Sigourney Weaver returns in a different character. Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, and Brendan Cowell have joined the group as newcomers.
Following the huge success of the original film, Cameron announced the first two sequels in 2010, with The Way of Water aiming for a 2014 release date. The inclusion of three additional sequels (to the original) plus the necessity to build new technology in order to shoot underwater performance capture scenes, a feat never previously done, led to major delays to enable the crew more time to work on the screenplay, pre-production, and visual effects.
Preliminary filming began on August 15, 2017, in Manhattan Beach, California, followed by principal photography on September 25, 2017, in New Zealand, concurrent with Avatar 3; production was completed in late September 2020, after almost three years of shooting.
The film’s theatrical release date has been pushed back several times, with the most recent being July 23, 2020. As per recent reports mov
It is presently scheduled to be published on December 16, 2022, with the three sequels following on December 20, 2024, December 18, 2026, and December 22, 2028. It is one of the most costly films of all time, with a budget of $250 million.
Avatar: The Way of Water Movie Premises
More than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water continues to chronicle the story of the Sully family, the turbulence that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the wars they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they encounter.
20th Century Studios
“The narrative is about family, about our families fighting to stay together, and the lengths we all go to defend each other and our home,” Sigourney Weaver says, “and it’s heavily influenced by [James Cameron’s] family and his delight in them, as well as how vulnerable you are when you have children.”
Avatar: The Way of Water Movie Production
Cameron claimed in 2006 that if Avatar was a success, he planned to develop two sequels. In 2010, he stated that the film’s overwhelming popularity reaffirmed his decision. The sequels were supposed to be released in December 2014 and 2015. He included various sequences from the original film in subsequent tale sequels. Cameron intended to shoot the sequels consecutively and to start production “after the manuscript is locked down.” He suggested that the sequels will broaden the cosmos by exploring more Polyphemus moons. The first sequel would focus on Pandora’s seas as well as more of the jungle. He planned to film the sequel in the Mariana Trench’s depths with a deepwater submersible.
Cameron revealed in 2011 that he was only getting started on designing Pandora’s ocean ecology and the other worlds that will be included in the plot. Although the plot will continue the original film’s environmental subject, it will not be “strident” because the film will focus on enjoyment. In December 2009, it was revealed that the sequels will continue to follow Jake and Neytiri’s characters. Cameron indicated that the humans will return as the movie’s villains. Cameron revealed in 2011 that he intended to film the sequels at a higher frame rate than the industry norm of 24 frames per second in order to give a feeling of realism.
Cameron originally indicated a possible third sequel in 2012, and it was formally announced the following year. Cameron had planned to release Avatar 2 in 2015, but development was pushed back to 2014, with the picture set to be released in December 2016, followed by the two additional sequels in 2017 and 2018. By 2015, the sequels’ release dates had been pushed back another year, with the first sequel set to be published in December 2017; this was owing to the writing process, which Cameron described as “difficult.” Fox announced another postponement the following month. In February 2016, it was announced that work on the sequels will begin in April 2016 in New Zealand.
Before his death in a plane crash in June 2015, Avatar composer James Horner was believed to be writing music for the franchise. Simon Franglen, who worked as a record producer with Horner, was rumored to be writing music for the film in December 2019. In August 2021, Landau reaffirmed his involvement in the project, while also associating with the next Avatar sequels. In addition to Franglen’s original themes, Horner’s soundtrack will be featured in the film. The film’s scoring began on July 29, 2022, at the Newman Scoring Stage in the 20th Century.
Avatar: The Way of Water movie release date
A revised release date of December 18, 2020, was revealed in April 2017, with the remaining sequels: Avatar 3, 4, and 5 following on December 17, 2021, December 20, 2024, and December 19, 2025, respectively. However, after the announcement of the three forthcoming Star Wars films in May 2019, the sequels were postponed by another two years, with this feature set to be released on December 17, 2021. The release date was again postponed owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, and a new release date of December 16, 2022, was announced in August 2020.
Cameron expressed optimism about the delays, comparing them to his films Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Aliens, both of which were economically successful sequels released seven years after the original movie.
Zoe Saldaa, who plays Neytiri, viewed the first 20 minutes of the film in December 2021. Fans were instructed to “brace themselves,” as she was flabbergasted and moved to tears. Empire stated in July 2022 that the duration was “about three hours” at that point in production. Cameron told the magazine, “I don’t want people grumbling about length when they sit and binge-watch [television] for eight hours… I’ve seen my kids sit for five one-hour programs in a row.
